Genetics

Blueberry genetics: parents, cuts and family tree

Blueberry is a DJ Short line rather than a universally fixed formula. Leafly gives Purple Thai × Thai; Weedmaps gives an Afghani male with two Thai females; JD Short’s account names Thai, Chocolate Thai, Afghan and Oaxacan foundations; AllBud calls true parentage unknown but suggests Purple Thai × Afghan; and Dutch Passion describes Afghani, Thai and Oaxacan components.1,2,3,4,5 That distinction matters because Blueberry is now used in hundreds of descendant names and seed-bank versions.5,6

Published parent accounts

The core facts align: Blueberry is attributed to DJ Short, is mostly indica by published labels and reaches back to the late 1970s.1,6,9 The detailed ancestry does not align, so this guide does not collapse the accounts into a single pedigree.1,2,3

Published accountWhat it says
LeaflyPurple Thai × Thai.1
WeedmapsAn Afghani male, one generation from Afghanistan, crossed with Highland Thai and Purple Thai females.2
JD Short, interviewed by Willamette WeekThai, Chocolate Thai, Afghan and Oaxacan were the four starting strains in DJ Short’s work.3
AllBudTrue parentage unknown; thought to descend from Purple Thai × Afghan.4
Dutch Passion seed lineAbout 80% indica / 20% sativa, chiefly Afghani indica with Thai and a smaller Oaxacan sativa component.5

The DJ Short line

DJ Short Seeds calls its current listing Blueberry F5 and dates the line to the late 1970s; SeedFinder’s DJ Short record likewise describes a mostly indica Blueberry dating to that decade.6,9 JD Short told Willamette Week that the phenotype people associate with Blueberry emerged around 1979, while emphasizing the parental material and selection work rather than a simple two-parent label.3

SeedFinder says DJ Short’s Blueberry was never available as feminized seed. Dutch Passion says it adopted DJ Short’s original Blueberry in cooperation with the breeder and introduced its line to the Dutch market in 1998, so a modern seed label can describe a related version rather than a clone-identical plant.5,6

Blueberry versus the Blueberry family

Blueberry is a parent or component in many later names, but a shared word is not proof of the same cultivar. The lab pipeline kept 411 exact-name flower tests and excluded 5,712 near-name records, including Blueberry Headband (424), Blueberry Cookies (327), Blueberry Diesel (163) and Blueberry Kush (162).10

Two sourced family links have their own Official Cannabis guides: Leafly describes Blue Dream as Blueberry × Haze and Blue Cheese as a Blueberry male × U.K. Cheese female. See Blue Dream and Blue Cheese for those distinct strains.7,8

How indica is it?

The labels are more consistent than the pedigree. Leafly files Blueberry as indica, while DJ Short Seeds, SeedFinder and AllBud describe it as roughly 80% indica / 20% sativa; Weedmaps instead calls it an indica-leaning hybrid.1,2,4,6,9

SeedFinder lists 614 direct descendants for its DJ Short Blueberry entry; that count is a database family listing, not proof of identity for any retail label.6
